A Family Tradition of Service Leads the Klostermans to NeighborWorks Boise
Volunteers are the heart of NeighborWorks® Boise, and recently, one family showed us that distance is no match for a strong commitment to service!
Mike and Mimi Klosterman, along with their five adult children and their families, traveled nearly 1,000 miles from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Idaho this summer for their annual family retreat. Each year, the family makes community service part of their time together, choosing a local project where they can roll up their sleeves and give back.
We’re so glad NeighborWorks Boise was part of this year’s family tradition!
The Klosterman family spent the day volunteering at two locations. Their morning started at Northwest Pointe Apartments in Boise, where they tackled outdoor projects including trimming branches, pulling weeds and picking up trash around the apartment complex.
NeighborWorks Boise provides resident services at properties like Northwest Pointe to help residents maintain stable housing, connect with counseling and coaching, and build community.
NeighborWorks Boise CEO Bud Compher joined the family for the morning cleanup. “They [the family] were all in! I admired the parents for teaching their kids what service leadership looks like and how to help your neighbor.”
Because the group included a new mother and infant, Resident Services Coordinator Angela Paz organized an indoor project, where family members sorted food, clothing and hygiene items that support NeighborWorks Boise’s resident programs.
After a morning at Northwest Pointe, the family headed to the home of local 81-year-old veteran Rob Desaulniers to lend a hand there, too. Not only did the Klosterman’s rake leaves, but they also trimmed overgrown plants, cleaned up around flower beds and pulled weeds.
“There’s a lot of leaves here, and it’s beyond my means as far as trying to keep it up at my age. This has been a blessing,” sa
id Rob, who has lived in his home for 41 years.
Bud said the Klosterman family was inspiring. We couldn’t agree more.
The Klostermans remind us that volunteering doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can be even more meaningful when you do it together.
We’re grateful to the Klosterman family and to the many volunteers who give their time, energy and heart to NeighborWorks Boise. Your willingness to serve helps build stronger homes, stronger neighborhoods and a stronger community for everyone.
