Homeownership Month, celebrated in June, highlights the importance of owning a home and its role in building strong communities and fostering financial stability. This month-long observance raises awareness about the benefits of homeownership, including wealth accumulation, stability, and personal empowerment. It also recognizes the efforts of housing advocates, government programs, and financial institutions in making homeownership accessible to more people.
Homeownership is becoming increasingly challenging for many individuals due to soaring home prices and interest rates. One of our partners, First Story, creates affordable homeownership opportunities with zero-interest loans on new homes for qualified first-time homebuyers. NeighborWorks® Boise (NWB) partners by providing Homebuyer Education and Pre-purchase Coaching for the recipients. On June 12, NWB joined a celebratory wall-raising event for the Tangen Family's new home. Mallory Tangen is the latest homeowner in First Story's program. Partners, family, and friends helped to build and raise a wall for Mallory's new home.
Mallory Tangen is originally from Boise. After spending some time away, she wanted to return to Idaho to be closer to family. However, with Idaho’s housing market and a single income, she thought that buying a home was out of reach. She heard about the First Story program through her mother and decided to apply, although she never thought she would be chosen. Despite her initial doubts, Mallory was thrilled to find out that she was able to buy a new build home with a yard. She hopes that her home will be a safe place for her nieces and nephews to visit. We're excited for Mallory's homeownership dream to come true and for the memories she will build in her new home.

The 42nd Paint the Town™ event was a resounding success! Our dedicated volunteers came together to paint 27 homes, while 13 homes received much-needed repairs through the efforts of Habitat for Humanity, volunteers, and NWB's Meridian Home Repair Program. Many of our volunteer teams, including those who have been participating for decades, enjoyed a fantastic time and highlighted the event as a wonderful team-building experience. We sincerely thank our amazing volunteers, partners, and donors. Your support makes this incredible community effort possible. We couldn't do it without you!

One of our partners, 4-H, recently hosted a cultural cooking event for our NWB Resident Services. Youth at two of our affordable apartment communities had the chance to demonstrate how to make traditional dishes from their countries of origin. This idea was initiated by the children themselves, and it was a delight to see them share their cultures with others.
