NEIGHBORWORKS® BOISE'S PAINT THE TOWN™ A NeighborWorks Week Event |
NeighborWorks® Boise (NWB) recently celebrated its 43rd annual Paint The Town™ event, marking a significant milestone in community service and neighborly care. This year’s event was part of NeighborWorks Week, a nationwide initiative by NeighborWorks America, showcasing the power of local communities coming together for a common cause.
This year, Paint The Town™ took on special significance as volunteers from Idaho Power came together to repaint the home of John Kelner, a retired veteran and Idaho Power retiree. For Kelner, who expressed gratitude for the revitalization of his home, the event was not just about a fresh coat of paint but about the community's enduring support. "At my age, hiring professionals for painting on a fixed income is challenging. This makes a significant difference, and I feel I can stay here much longer," Kelner shared warmly.

Paint The Town 2025 focused on serving veteran neighbors like Kelner, alongside neighbors with disabilities and senior community members. Beyond the fresh coats of paint, the event symbolizes NWB's commitment to keeping our neighbors housed and fostering a strong sense of community spirit. |
Russ Weeden, a long-time Paint The Town™ volunteer and Idaho Power employee reflected on the event's impact: "Idaho Power has proudly supported Paint The Town™ and Rake Up Boise™ for many years. This year's focus on veterans, like John, made it especially meaningful. It's an honor to give back to those who have served our community." |

For over four decades, Paint The Town™ has been a cornerstone of NWB's efforts to preserve homeownership, revitalize neighborhoods, and build lasting connections among residents. Each painted home represents solidarity, compassion, and the power of community coming together for a greater good. Partnerships are essential to continuing this work. One key partnership is with Treasure Valley Habitat for Humanity, which completed repairs on six of this year's Paint The Town™ homes — increasing the impact for those homeowners. We are also grateful for our paint partner, Rodda Miller Paint. Their generous contribution of paint for the 24 homes makes a huge difference for this program.
Looking forward, NWB remains committed to its mission of creating and preserving affordable housing in the Treasure Valley, one home at a time. |

HOPE, HARD WORK, AND HOMEOWNERSHIP
A Special Milestone for One Local Family |
Last week, we joined a joyful wall-raising celebration for a local family building their future through First Story’s interest-free loan program. The Duffy's homeownership journey began in 2023 with NWB's Homebuyer Education class, followed by participation in our Pre-Purchase Counseling program. Though they just barely missed the income cap for the 2024 First Story home, they didn’t give up.
|
They remained committed by maintaining their credit, reviewing their budget, and consulting before making any major financial decisions, all in hopes of qualifying for the next opportunity. In 2025, their perseverance paid off, and they were selected for First Story's program. This program offers a 30-year loan with no down payment, no interest, and no cash required at closing for a new, move-in-ready Hayden home. The Duffys exemplify how families who do everything “right” can still be priced out of today’s housing market. Their story highlights the importance of affordable housing programs like First Story, which help make the dream of homeownership a reality.
