Rake Up Boise™ VOLUNTEER STORY Dianne and her father outside his home. Dianne Berning is the longest running Rake Up Boise™ volunteer. When she was just 15 years old, her dad took her to volunteer with him for this community revitalization event. She loved it so much, she started her own team when she was older and has been participating for 37 years, as long as the event has been taking place. Dianne hasn’t missed a year of recruiting a team and raking a handful of seniors' yards.
Now Dianne gets to rake her dad's yard through Rake Up Boise™. This is particularly special since he's the one who introduced her to this annual tradition.
“It’s just such a wonderful program that does so much for our city and the people that need it.”
Rake Up Boise™ Resident Story Cindy and her volunteer team from First Federal Bank. Cindy and Terry Rosen had the largest yard of the year with 1/3rd of an acre, needing over 175 leaf bags. Cindy said that when they could rake their yard on their own, it would take months because the trash would get full and they would have to wait until the next weekend to load up the garbage again. This meant they would end up raking well into the winter.
The volunteer team from First Federal Bank filled up an entire trailer of leaf bags to take to the landfill so the parks can use it as compost. Their team also filled in the Rosen's landscaping, picked up branches and spent extra time to make the yard look polished. Cindy and Terry have been recipients of Rake Up Boise™ for about four years. She made cinnamon rolls and cookies for the team this year, to help show her gratitude, as she stated, “I want to cry every time, they are so amazing.”

Rake Up Boise™ is an event I look forward to all year. I joined Rico Sims' (former Rake Up Boise™ Committee member) team for the last few years. Not only does this event impact the folks who we help but it personally impacted me. It created a bond between myself and some of my colleagues. I was able to see and learn from Rico's ambition to help others. Rico was always trying to do better for others which was so admirable. Being a part of this as a volunteer showed me how easy it is to give back to others. I never thought that spending a few hours raking up leaves would bring so much joy to others in the community. Year after year I watched Rico carry on with that positivity and giving spirit regardless of everything else going on. I desire to continue to carry on his giving spirit and his commitment to the community by ensuring that WAFD has a team to join every year! I thank Rico for showing me what impact simply being kind has but I also thank Rake Up Boise™, NeighborWorks® Boise and everyone involved to make this event possible! Note: Rico was a beloved member of the community and a faithful supporter of Rake Up Boise™. He passed away in 2020 and many continue to honor his life through their service to the community.
